YoYoMonkey asked:

I found a 2001 v6 with 70,000 miles for $5,000. I also found a 2000 v6 with 118,000 miles for $4,000.

About how many miles do Mustangs last in general? Should I even buy a used Mustang? Do they break down a lot?

Any sort of input on how long they last and when they start needing major repairs will help.

it all depends on how well the other owners took care of the motor. if they changed they oil when it needed it and made sure not to bring it up to 100mph alot any car can last for at least 150,000 miles.

As long as its well maintained with regular services, they should last upto 150-170K.

The most important thing probably is the Engine condition. I suggest you do a complete check of the Car before buying.

Good Luck with ur Mustang Hunting!!

I’ve seen a 5.0 get driven hard, that was serviced regularly go PAST 200,000 miles! However, keeping it serviced is the key, if you don’t know the history, it could be a ticking time bomb.

i say on original engine at about 200K if properly maintained, on a rebuilt maybe 157K, if rebuild from it original block.

With Mustangs in the years that you are looking at, the V6’s are notorious for having headgasket issues. If you are truly looking for longevity and want a Mustang - consider an 8cyl GT instead of the V6. I have seen 99-04 4.6 Liter Mustang GT’s with well over 140,000 miles. I have seen the old 5.0 Liter Mustangs with even more miles. Try to stay away from the v6 mustangs 99-04.

I agree with some other people. The V6 is not a great motor, they tend to eat head gaskets. I think it has gotten better over the years but still not great. The 4.6 V8 is good motor and will last.

The only thing you have to lookout for with the V8 Mustangs is how hard they were abused. Check for well worn back tires, slipping clutch, rubber dust under the fenders (from burnouts) and get maintainence records. If you get an adult owned care it will last you a long time.

Give me a 1/4 mile and I’ll break anything. Haha

Well while I never had engine problems with my 04′ Mustang - I had ****** and front end problems starting at 20k, until the ****** finally blew at 40k. It was in the shop all of the time. However, I bought an 06 to replace it (v6) and have almost 40k on it- and have never had a repair.
