What size Engine? 289, 302,351. There should be a “set-screw” on the drivers side of the carb. It will have a spring on it. turn it to the right to Idle down, and left to increase idle.
Also, does it have a Choke?
When the engine is cold, there is a fast idle cam on the side with the choke. This could be stuck so make sure it moves freely. You should only adjust the idle after the engine is warm. Where the linkage attaches from the gas pedal to the carburetor, you should see a flathead ***** that will be on the carburetor and rests against the body of the carb. Turn clockwise to increase the idle and counterclockwise to decrease the speed of the idle.
sounds like your choke is not working properly if it stalls after starting it. you can adjust the idle by a little ***** on the throttle plate by were the cable attaches to the carb. normally when the choke is applied to start there is a little cam that makes the idle speed increase during start up. if you have a automatic or electric choke make sure it closes when the engine is cold. also make sure it opens all the way once the engine is at operating temp. as to adjusting the carb you will need a vacume guage hook it up to a port that has vacume at idle adjust the low speed jet so the guage needle moves as little as possible. overall engine condition will effect this also rings, valves etc. if you cant get the needle to to stay within 1-2 inches either way do a compression check to see the condition of the rings, do a leakdown test to check the valve seat and guide condition. good luck
Sounds like your carb needs to be rebuilt.
The float on the inside needs to be adjusted, it is not getting proper gas.
Not hard to do yourself, but you will want a book to walk you through the process.
