somedude asked:

I own a 1966 Mustang 289 V8. I want to know what is the best method of warming up the car in the morning. I usually push the gas twice (quickly) and the car is loud and accelerated. I think that might be too much gas and it is wasting more gas than i really need to. also, how long do you keep it idle until it is ready to be driven, 1 or 2 or even 5 minutes, before the engine is warmed up?

Thanks.

I drove carbuerated cars for years.

You probably turn the ignitio to ON, not START,
then push the accelerator to floor one time, then start it.

If it starts and idles ok this is correct way to start it and it doesn’t get any better.

If it doesn’t start and you have to pump it twice
you could go to the expense of having the carb rebuilt, which will NOT improve your gas mileage, beleive me.

Gasoline and a match. That should warm it up pretty fast.

Push to floor 1 time, release the throttle, than start is the correct way if it is working properly. If it has electronic choke, key should be in the ON pos. If it is mechanical choke, key could be left off until ready to start. What you are doing is allowing the choke spring to close the choke, and setting the high idle cam so it will not load up and die.
The amount of time to warm depends on the temp, and how long since last driven. You want to be sure all fluids (engine and trans) have had time to circulate and come up to operating temp. Depending on your climate, the thermostat will keep the cold water in the motor until it is hot enough to need cooled. Feel the air coming out of the defroster, you will notice when it stops being cold, and starts blowing warm.
Note the temp gage at that moment, this is the earliest I would drive.
If you start it and drive away the engine has not had time to pump oil to lube the top of motor, and driving with the choke on wastes more gas than waiting. Not only does driving with the choke on waste gas, it also has a lot of raw unburned pollution coming out your exhaust.
If you have to pump the peddle to get it to start, Your carb is out of adjustment, or wore out and needs rebuilt or replaced

Push the gas pedal halfway down to prime the engine and close the automatic choke…start the car and it should run at fast idle like this for a half minute…push and release the gas pedal slightly and quickly to open the choke a bit and automatically lower the idle a bit…run like this for another minute or so and then start driving to warm up the engine….let it run a while longer if it’s really cold out. The choke is linked to a cam lever by the carb throttle stop ***** that raises the idle speed in 3 or 4 steps…closed choke=fast idle (around 1000 rpm) and gradually lowers to regular idle when the choke is fully open and engine is warmed up. Pushing the gas pedal halfway closes the choke and also squirts a small amount of fuel into the carb throat to prime the engine for starting cold. Sometimes in cold weather, more fuel is needed for priming, so you may have to pump the pedal all the way down or twice but be careful not to overdo and flood the engine. If you need to pump more than this, the carb accelerator pump may be bad. Holding the pedal down to the floor while cranking can clear out excess fuel if it’s flooded.

Accelerated is good, shows that your choke is working.

You can adjust the Choke idle speed by the ***** on the Carb that is associated with the choke cam. ***** it out a little bit to drop the RPM if you want. If it’s too low of an RPM then it will stall when you put it in gear.

You can drive your car any time you want, you don’t need to warm it up if it’s in good condition. If it stalls when you put it in gear then you need to warm it up a few minutes.

Most people warm up their cars not because of the engine but it’s SO cold they want the heater and defroster to be working when they hop in. There’s nothing worse than driving in the cold with no heat.

usually people have to warm up cars because they are out of tune. If it’s tuned up, you should be able to take right off, just drive slowly until every thing is warmed up.
